Philanthropy

Sigma Alpha Epsilon has participated in philanthropies since it’s inception in 1856.  The main reason is to promote brotherhood and the welfare of brothers as well as anyone around the organization.  We also believe in serving the community that has served us since 1987, by giving back.  If you have any questions or comments, or would like us to participate in a philanthropy in your community, please contact us. Remember, Sigma Alpha Epsilon cares.

The Maryland Omicron-Pi chapter is well known for it’s community service all throughout the UMBC community.  Every fall, MD-OP along with Captain James Landing Restaurant host the annual Crabfeast in Downtown Balitmore.  The Crabfeast has been an MD-OP tradition for years, and will continue for years to come.  It is an opportunity for people to come out and get a taste of Maryland’s favorite food while having a good time with family and friends, not to mention it’s for a good cause.  All proceeds from the Crabfeast go to the St. Vincent’s Children’s Center.

Raising money for the children is good, but we at MD-OP feel that donating money isn’t enough.  In addition to providing donations to the St. Vincent’s Children’s Center, we personally go to the center to meet the kids and have a great time doing it.  There we enjoy getting to know all the children, and then play games with them.  From basketball to board games, these kids love to play it all.

The Run 4 Kathy has been held every year since 1998 in memory of Kathryn Popp Long who died of cervical cancer in 1999.  The Run 4 Kathy is a 5K race held every year to benefit the Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center at Johns Hopkins.  Every year, MD-OP volunteers to help set up for the race, pass out refreshments to runners, set up the race course and direct runners while the race is in progress.  It is an overall great experience to participate in such an event where people diagnosed with cancer are given hope by cancer survivors in the race.

Fundraising

As in most organizations, fundraising plays a very important role in the survival of an organization, especially a non-profit organization.  Proper fundraising ensures that the chapter we care about stays as great as it is.  In order to do so, we take advantage of every fundraising opportunity available.  If your organization would like to plan a fundraiser with us, please don’t hesitate to contact us.  Donations are always welcome.
